What Graphic Design Is To Me

History of Graphic Design

Graphic Design began about 16,000 years ago when cavemen began painting on cave walls. Since Graphic Design is the art of conveying messages cave paintings are classified as Graphic design since they're used to symbolize things. Also in Pompeii a stone mosaic was used to communicate the message, "Beware of the dog". It warned civilians about a ferocious dog. Graphic Design is also used in political cartoons that were used to convey the artists view on certain political points.

Process of Graphic Design

When Graphic Designers begin a new project it is recommended to follow a process to make sure the outcome of the project is to the best of your ability. When you first meet with your client you want to make sure to ask as many questions as possible to gather all of the information you need to begin your project. You want to make sure there is no misunderstandings about what the client wants. After the meeting with the client it's usually a good idea to research the clients business, old logos, and what their competitors are. Knowing your clients competitors will make it much easier to make a logo or what they are wanting that is better if you know what it is going up against. After gathering your research you will want to begin sketching on a piece of paper. This is a lot more effective than jumping right on to the computer because it makes you put a lot of thought into many different ideas. Whenever you get stuck and can't think of ideas you will want to take breaks to refresh your brain and get a new start on it, it also helps to walk around and look at things to get more ideas. When you meet with your client to reveal the project do not be against any feedback it is good to be open minded about things to make the client happier with their design.

Graphic Designer

Having the opportunity to become a graphic designer in high school has been very beneficial to me. It has taught me a lot about how much your voice and vision on the world can effect your work. People that are not very openminded have a hard time listening to peoples feedback and possibly changing their work so that it will look better. Being able to voice your opinion in a graphic is an extremely helpful skill i have picked up. It makes some things easier and helps me with other classes when making posters or visual designs. When i was asked to make a t-shirt about what graphic design is to me it was really difficult to come up with just one word to represent everything that it means to me. So i just added a font and an image that did a good job of representing everything it is to me.
